The long read

More than a scoreline.

From local beginnings to the big occasions. This is Leicester City.

An introductory history of the men’s first team, from the club’s origins through 2021. Selected turning points and honours, rather than a complete season archive; later results are outside this edition.

Fosse’s beginnings

Leicester Fosse began in 1884, with early links to a chapel bible class and former school pupils. Finding a lasting home took several moves before Filbert Street in 1891. Election to the Football League followed in 1894. Source →

A new name and cup ambitions

Financial problems after the First World War led to a new company and the Leicester City name in 1919. The club reached several FA Cup finals without winning. The League Cup supplied a first success in 1964, with two more wins in the 1990s and 2000. Source →

From the third tier to the title

Relegation in 2008 took Leicester into the third tier, followed immediately by the League One championship. In 2015–16 Claudio Ranieri’s team won the Premier League. It was the club’s first English top-flight championship, following a rise that few had anticipated. Source →

A different Wembley ending

Leicester’s previous FA Cup final defeats gave the 2021 win particular meaning. Youri Tielemans scored as Chelsea were beaten 1–0. The cup joined the league trophy in the club’s record, closing this introduction with another first. Source →
