The long read

More than a scoreline.

From local beginnings to the big occasions. This is Linfield.

An introductory history of the men’s first team, from the club’s origins through 2014. Selected turning points and honours, rather than a complete season archive; later results are outside this edition.

From the spinning mill

Linfield began in 1886 among workers at the Ulster Spinning Company’s Linfield Mill in Belfast. The original name was Linfield Athletic. The first playing field lay behind the mill, giving the club an industrial origin that long preceded its permanent stadium. Source →

An early place at the top

Linfield won the first Irish League championship in 1890–91. Domestic league and cup competitions became central to the club’s record. The titles belong to the Irish League’s own history, which should be understood separately from the English league system. Source →

Windsor Park and Europe

Windsor Park became home in 1905, after a succession of early grounds. In 1966–67 Linfield reached the European Cup quarter-finals. CSKA Sofia ended the run with a 3–2 aggregate victory, after a draw in Belfast and a narrow defeat away. Source →

Jeffrey’s trophy-winning years

David Jeffrey’s long spell brought repeated league and cup successes, including a clean sweep of four domestic trophies in 2005–06. When his departure was announced in 2014, UEFA recorded thirty trophies over seventeen years. This introduction ends with that managerial era. Source →
