The long read

More than a scoreline.

From local beginnings to the big occasions. This is West Ham United.

An introductory history of the men’s first team, from the club’s origins through 2023. Selected turning points and honours, rather than a complete season archive; later results are outside this edition.

The ironworks connection

The club traces its origins to Thames Ironworks in 1895. That works team closed in 1900 and West Ham United was established. Keeping both dates visible explains the industrial identity without suggesting that the original company team simply carried on unchanged. Source →

From the Football League to Wembley

West Ham were elected to the Football League in 1919. Four years later they won promotion and played Bolton Wanderers in the first Wembley FA Cup final. Defeat in that final did not diminish the importance of reaching a wider stage. Source →

Moore and the cup-winning years

The FA Cup in 1964 and Cup Winners’ Cup in 1965 made Ron Greenwood’s team a landmark side. Bobby Moore, Geoff Hurst and Martin Peters then played in England’s 1966 World Cup victory. That international achievement is part of their story, not a West Ham honour. Source →

From Brooking to Prague

Trevor Brooking’s header won the 1980 FA Cup while West Ham were in the Second Division. After the 2016 move from the Boleyn Ground, the next European trophy arrived in 2023: a 2–1 Conference League final win over Fiorentina. Source →
