The long read

More than a scoreline.

From local beginnings to the big occasions. This is Wolverhampton Wanderers.

An introductory history of the men’s first team, from the club’s origins through 2020. Selected turning points and honours, rather than a complete season archive; later results are outside this edition.

A founder with an early cup tradition

Wolves were established in 1877 and joined the first Football League season in 1888. FA Cup wins in 1893 and 1908 gave the club major honours long before its most famous championship side. Molineux became home in 1889. Source →

Cullis, Wright and the floodlights

Stan Cullis and captain Billy Wright were central to the 1950s team. League titles in 1954, 1958 and 1959 made this Wolves’ strongest domestic era. Floodlit matches against visiting European sides, particularly Honvéd, also helped stimulate interest in a formal European competition. Source →

The bottom of the climb

League Cup wins in 1974 and 1980 preceded a severe decline. By 1986 Wolves were in the Fourth Division after three consecutive relegations. Steve Bull’s arrival became part of the recovery, with successive promotions restoring a place in the second tier. Source →

Returning to a wider stage

There were further promotions and setbacks before the 2018 Championship title. Under Nuno Espírito Santo, Wolves returned to European competition and reached the Europa League quarter-finals in 2020. The route there was far from a continuous run of success. Source →
